Domain names explained

Every website has its own unique address on the web, known as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). A domain name (eg www.yourwebsite.com) forms part of the URL of your website.

The screenshot below details which part of a website address is the URL and which part is the domain:

You will see that after ‘yourwebsite’ is ‘.com’ and this is known as the domain extension. There are various domain extensions available, such as:

.com      .net        .org        .xyz        .biz         .uk          .co.uk    and many more…

Generally, a ‘.com’ domain extension is preferred because it’s the most commonly recognized and remembered, though it’s not essential that you use this when choosing your domain name.

When registering your domain name, it’s important to consider a number of factors:

  1. Choose a domain name with .com as the extension (if available)
  2. Include your business name where possible
  3. Include keywords if feasible
  4. Keep it short
  5. Make it easy to pronounce and spell

When you set-up website hosting, you will be able to purchase a domain name at that time.
